1. Biodiversity & Grouping

Biodiversity: The variety of plants and animals found in a particular region.

Why Group Organisms?

Grouping makes it easier to study plants & animals based on their similarities and differences.

  • Plants & animals depend on each other for food, shelter, seed dispersal & survival!
  • Criteria for grouping: Height, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds, habitat, movement.

2. Plant Types (Stem & Height)

🌿 Herbs Short

Soft & tender green stem; thin & easy to bend.

e.g., Tomato, Grass, Mustard

Hard, thin woody stem; branches arise close to ground.

e.g., Rose, Hibiscus, Tulsi

🌳 Trees Tall

Hard, thick & brown woody stem (trunk); branches start high up.

e.g., Mango, Neem, Deodar

Climbers: Weak stem, needs support to climb (e.g., Pea).
Creepers: Spread horizontally on ground (e.g., Pumpkin).

3. Leaf Venation & Roots

Pattern of veins = Venation

4. Animal Grouping & Movements

Animals are grouped based on movement type, body parts used, habitat & eating habits.

5. Habitat & Adaptations (Desert vs Mountain)

Habitat: The place where plants/animals live (provides food, water, air, shelter).
Adaptations: Special features that enable organisms to survive in their surroundings.

Hot Desert Camel (Rajasthan)

  • Long legs & wide hooves: Walk on hot sand without sinking or gaining ground heat.
  • 1 Hump: Stores fat for food scarcity.
  • Water Conservation: Excretes tiny urine, dry dung, does NOT sweat!

Cold Desert Camel (Ladakh)

  • Shorter legs: Walk easily in rocky/mountainous terrain.
  • 2 Humps: Shrink in late winter as stored fat is consumed.
  • Long hair/fur: Thick coat protects from extreme cold.
🌡 Cactus (Desert Plant): Thick fleshy stems store water; green stem does photosynthesis.
🌲 Deodar Tree (Mountains): Conical shape + sloping branches let heavy snow slide off easily.
