1. Sources of Light
Light is a form of energy that makes things visible to us. Things that produce light are divided into two clear categories:
Luminous Objects
Objects that emit/give out light of their own.
Non-Luminous Objects
Objects that do NOT emit light themselves; we only see them when they reflect light from a luminous source.
Warning: Moon is non-luminous! It only reflects sunlight.
2. Rectilinear Propagation
"Light travels in a Straight Line!"
Proof Activities:
-
A.
The Alignment Test: Aligning three matchboxes with holes in the exact same spot allows you to see torchlight. Shift even one box slightly sideways, and light is instantly blocked!
-
B.
The Pipe Trick:Straight Pipe → Can see candle flameBent Pipe → Cannot see candle flame!
3. Materials & Light
How materials interact with light determines if we can see through them:
Passes light fully. We can see through them clearly.
Glass, Clear Water, AirPasses light partially. See-through is blurry/hazy.
Tracing Paper, Butter Paper, Frosted GlassBlocks light completely. Cannot see through at all!
Cardboard, Metal, Thick Cloth, Wood4. Shadow Dynamics
3 Essential Requirements:
Key Shadow Properties:
- Always Dark: No matter the color of the object, the shadow is always black!
- Variable Size: Moves closer to the light source → Larger. Moves closer to screen → Smaller.
- Misleading Shapes: A shadow can tell us shape details but can also trick us (e.g., hand shadow puppetry).
5. Reflection & Mirrors
Properties of Images in a Plane Mirror:
- Same Size: Image is exactly as big as the object.
- Erect: Upright (head stays top, feet bottom).
- Lateral Inversion: Left side of object becomes right side of image & vice-versa.
- Equal Distance: The image is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it.
- Virtual: Cannot be caught on a screen.
6. Pinhole Camera
A simple optical device without any lens that forms real, interesting images on a tracing paper screen.
Mechanism of Construction:
Two cardboard boxes (one smaller, sliding inside the larger). One end of the large box has a tiny pinhole. The corresponding end of the small box is cut out and covered with a translucent tracing paper screen.
Image Characteristics:
7. Optical Devices
Cool devices we can build using multiple flat mirrors and light reflection!
Periscope
A Z-shaped tube containing two plane mirrors mounted parallel facing each other at a 45° angle.
Kaleidoscope
Contains three rectangular plane mirror strips joined in a triangle inside a cylinder with colored beads/glass bits at one end.
Self-Check: Match the Columns
| Concept / Object | Key Operational Property | Matching Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pinhole Camera | Forms an inverted image | Due to rectilinear propagation of light. |
| 2. Opaque Object | Blocks light completely | Forms distinct, dark shadows. |
| 3. Transparent Object | Allows light to pass fully | Does not form visible shadows. |
| 4. Shadow | Dark region behind the object | Always black, regardless of light/object color. |
| 5. Plane Mirror | Reflection & Lateral Inversion | Shows erect image of equal object size. |

- Indian Shadow Puppetry: Culturally known as Tholu Bommalata (Andhra Pradesh) or Charma Bahuli Natya (Maharashtra) — uses flat leather puppet shadows for story telling.
- Aranmula Kannadi: A unique metal mirror crafted in Kerala that reflects light without refraction distortions found in normal glass mirrors!
